Privacy Policy

We wrote this privacy policy (“Privacy Policy”) to help you understand what information we collect, how we use it, and what choices you have regarding your privacy. When using any of TotScoop’s websites, products, or services (“Products”), you consent to the collection, transfer, manipulation, storage, disclosure, and other uses of your information by TotScoop and its family of companies (“TotScoop”), as described in this Privacy Policy. Please read this entire Privacy Policy thoroughly for details — but we’ve summarized the key points below, for those of you reading this while simultaneously bouncing a baby, talking on the phone, and making dinner. :)

  • We believe privacy is of paramount importance, and have a strong commitment to treating your information as we would want our own information (and that of our children) to be treated.
  • We aim to be as transparent as possible about what information we collect and how we use it.
  • We are committed to only collecting what information we need to in order to give you the best possible experience using our Products.
  • We will treat your personal information (i.e. information that allows someone to identify or contact you) with care, and won’t use it for anything other than described in this Privacy Policy. Among other things, we will never rent, sell, or make it available to any third party without your express permission.
  • Although we ask you for information about your children in order to personalize your TotScoop experience, sensitive personal information about your children (for example, their names or birthdates) will not be publicly visible to anyone. Only the approximate age(s) and gender(s) of your children will appear in your public profile.
  • If you register or log in using Facebook, we will never post anything on your Facebook Wall, or share any of your TotScoop content back to Facebook, without your express permission.

1. What information do we collect?

We collect information in two ways:

a. When you give it to us or give us permission to obtain it

When you sign up for or use our Products, you voluntarily provide certain information about yourself. This can include your name, profile photo, email address, location, taste and lifestyle preferences, and product category preferences; information about your children, such as their names, genders, and birthdates; the identities of your friends and people you are interested in following on the site; and any other information that you provide. You also may give us permission to access your information via other services. For example, if you register for or log into the site via Facebook, you will be explicitly asked to approve Facebook sharing selected information — including basic information from your public profile (such as your name, gender, and locale), your email address, your friend list, and your Facebook likes — with TotScoop. If and when we add the ability to log in via other services, analogous information sharing may occur. The information we obtain from those services often depends on your settings or their privacy policies, so be sure to check what those are. In addition, as a user-generated content site we also store and use the content that you contribute to the site, for example product recommendations, ratings, reviews, comments, questions, replies, “likes,” “helpful” votes, and so on.

b. As you use our Products

We may collect the following types of data via technology as you use our Products:

  • Log data. When you use our Products, our servers automatically record information (“log data”) including information that your browser sends whenever you visit a website. This log data may include your Internet Protocol address, browser type and settings, the date and time of your request, how you used TotScoop, and cookie data.
  • Cookie data. Depending on how you’re accessing our Products, we may use “cookies” (a small text file sent by your computer each time you visit our website, unique to your TotScoop account or your browser), or similar technologies to record log data. When we use cookies, we may use either “session” cookies (that last until you close your browser) or “persistent” cookies (that last until you or your browser delete them). For example, we may use cookies to store certain preferences or settings so you don‘t have to set them up every time you visit TotScoop. Some of the cookies we use are associated with your TotScoop account (including personal information about you, such as the email address you gave us), and other cookies are not.
  • Pixel tags. We many use “pixel tags” (tiny graphic images with unique identifiers, similar in function to Cookies, that are used to track online movements of Web users). In contrast to Cookies, which are stored on a user’s computer hard drive, Pixel tags are embedded invisibly in Web pages. Pixel tags also allow us to send email messages in a format users can read, and they tell us whether emails have been opened to ensure that we are sending only messages that are of interest to our users. We may use this information to reduce, eliminate, or modify the types of emails that users receive.
  • Device information. In addition to log data, we may also collect information about the device from which you’re logging into TotScoop, including what type of device it is, what operating system you’re using, device settings, unique device identifiers, and crash data. Whether we collect some or all of this information often depends on what type of device you’re using and its settings. For example, different types of information are available depending on whether you’re using a Mac or a PC, or an iPhone or an Android phone. To learn more about what information your device makes available to us, please also check the policies of your device manufacturer or software provider.

The information we collect may be “personally identifiable” (meaning it can be used to specifically identify you as a unique person) or “non-personally identifiable” (meaning it can’t be used to specifically identify you).

2. Our policy on children’s information

a. Information collection from children under 13

TotScoop’s Products are intended for general audiences and are not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you become aware that a child has provided us with personal information without parental consent, please contact us. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information without parental consent, we will take steps to remove such information and terminate the child's account.

b. Information collection from parents about their children

We do collect voluntary information from parents about their children, including those under age 13. We ask optionally for the name(s), birthdate(s), and gender(s) of your child(ren), so that we may personalize your experience, as described below. Only your child’s approximate age (in weeks, months, or years) and gender will be publicly accessible to other users (for example, “13 mo. (boy)”; we will NOT display your child’s name or exact birthdate publicly).

3. How do we use the information we collect?

The information that we collect may be used within TotScoop and its family of companies in an number of ways, as outlined below.

a. To develop and improve our Products

We use the information we collect to provide our Products to you and improve them, to develop new Products, and to protect TotScoop and our users. For example, we may compare how people use two different versions of a product, which can help us understand which version is easier or more enjoyable to use.

b. To offer you personalized content, including:

  • Suggesting product categories or products that we think you might be interested in, for example based on your child’s age or gender, your taste preferences (e.g. affordable or organic), or your browsing behavior.
  • Overlaying pictures of your friends on top of products as you browse our Products, so you can see at a glance which products are recommended by someone you know.
  • Floating reviews and comments from your friends to the top of the pile as you browse a Product or Brand Details Page, so you can easily see what people you know think about the product or brand.
  • Suggesting other users with whom we think you might be interested in connecting, for example based on your stage as a parent (expecting, first-time parent, parent of 2+ kids), the age or gender of your child(ren), your taste preferences (e.g. affordable or organic), or your location.
  • Showing you featured brands, sponsored listings, or ads you might be interested in. These will always be clearly identified as advertisements or paid listings, as described in our Terms.

c. Other uses

  • To send you updates, notifications, newsletters, marketing materials and other information that may be of interest to you. For example, depending on your email notification settings, we may send you weekly updates that include product suggestions tailored to your child’s age and your taste preferences. You can opt out of any non-essential communications via your account settings (or through other settings we may provide).
  • To help your friends and contacts find you on TotScoop. For example, if you sign up using a Facebook account, we may help your Facebook friends find your account on TotScoop when they first sign up. Or, we may allow people to search for your account on TotScoop using your name, username, or email address.
  • To respond to your questions or comments.

We may use or store information wherever TotScoop does business, potentially including countries outside your own. If you reside outside of the United States, note that laws regarding the processing of personal data may be less stringent in the United States than in your country.

4. How do we share the information we collect, with other users and third parties?

a. Your public profile and user-generated content

TotScoop was designed as a tool to help parents seek out product recommendations from friends and parents like them. As such, when you contribute content to our Products — for example product recommendations, ratings, reviews, comments, questions, replies, “likes,” and “helpful” votes — this content will be made publicly available via our Products (where it will be accessible by both registered and unregistered users), and will potentially be made available via partner sites, products, or services as well. This content may also be featured or used in TotScoop marketing materials. In addition, when you populate your public profile on TotScoop, that information is also accessible to anyone. When you post either of these two types of content to our Products, you should have no expectation of privacy. However, you always have the option to delete a specific piece of content and/or terminate your account (resulting in deletion of all of your content) at any time.

b. Your personal data

“Personal data” means data that would allow someone to identify or contact you, including, for example, your name, address, telephone number, email address, or any other non-public information about you.
Aside from any information that you choose to share in your public profile or in the user-generated content that you contribute to our Products (as described above), we will not share your personal data. For example, we will never rent or sell it to others. The only limited instances in which we may share your personal information include the following:

  • Social networking sites: If you’ve chosen to link to your TotScoop account to other social networking services (e.g. Facebook), you may be able to choose to publish your activity on TotScoop to them. By default we will not publish any activity to those services; for example, we will never post anything back to your Facebook wall, send any Facebook messages on your behalf, or share anything else back to Facebook without your express consent.
  • Third-party service providers: If we need to share it with third-party service providers in order to provide you with the Products that we offer, to provide technical support, and/or to provide other services requested by TotScoop. These third-party service providers are required not to use your personal data for any other purposes than the provide the services requested by TotScoop.
  • Links to third-party sites: Our Products may contain links to unaffiliated third party websites (e.g. retailer sites such as Amazon.com). Except as set forth herein, we do not share your personal information with them, and are not responsible for their privacy practices. We suggest you read the privacy policies on all such third party websites.
  • Affiliates and acquisitions: We may share some or all of your Personal Data with any parent company, subsidiaries, joint ventures, or other companies under a common control (“Affiliates”), in which case we will require our Affiliates to honor this Privacy Policy. If another company acquires TotScoop or all or substantially all of our assets, that company will possess the same information, and will assume the rights and obligations with respect to that information as described in this Privacy Policy.
  • Other disclosures: If we believe that disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with a law, regulation or legal request; to protect the safety, rights, or property of the public, any person, or TotScoop; or to detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security or technical issues.

c. Aggregated and non-personally identifiable information

We may also share aggregated or non-personally identifiable information about you (including your family profile, location, taste preferences, browsing behavior, and site activity) with our partners or others. For example, we may share with an advertiser the number of users that have been exposed to, or clicked on, advertisements. Or, we may help brand partners to gain insights (at a general or individual but unnamed level) into their current or potential customer base, or those of their competitors. We may also use this non-personally identifiable information to help brand partners target you with relevant advertisements or offers, to be delivered through TotScoop’s Products or email infrastructure (depending on your email preferences).

5. Your choices regarding your personal information

Our goal is to give you simple and meaningful choices over your information. If you have a TotScoop account, many of the choices you have on TotScoop are built directly into the product or your account settings. For example, you can:

  • Limit or change information available in your public profile page at any time, for example:
    • Your username/URL name and the way that your name appears throughout our Products. Note: If you do not wish for your real name to appear publicly, you may anonymize your name (e.g. use your last initial instead of your full last name) or use a pseudonym. Note that doing so may detract from your credibility on the site. Also please note that others may still be able to identify you if, for example, you include identifying information in your reviews, use the same account information on other sites, or allow other sites to share information about you with TotScoop.
    • Your child’s name. As described above, your child’s name is only used to personalize your experience, and is NOT publicly displayed to other users. However, if you are uncomfortable with providing your child’s information to TotScoop at all, you are welcome to use just a first initial or pseudonym, or alternatively to use our Products without saving any children to your account (however note that in this latter case, your shopping experience will not be as personalized).
    • You can also edit your taste preferences, your “About me” description, and which if any of your social media presences are linked from your profile page.
  • Link or unlink your TotScoop account from an account on another service (e.g., Facebook). Eventually we plan to automate this process, but for now please contact us to do this.
  • We do not yet support the Do Not Track browser setting, however we aim to add this in the future.
  • Delete a specific piece of content (e.g. “have” or “want” status, rating, review, comment, or question) at any time. To “unhave” a product or remove a rating or review associated with your account, simply hover over the “Have” button and select “Don’t have.” To “unwant” a product, simply hover over the “Want” button and select “Don’t want.” To delete a comment or question, navigate to the appropriate Product or Brand Details Page and access the drop-down menu next to your content.
  • Close your account at any time. When you close your account, we’ll deactivate it and delete your ratings, reviews, comments, questions, and social actions (including “likes” and “helpful” votes). Note we may retain archived copies of your information as required by law or for legitimate business purposes (including to help address fraud and spam). To close your account, please contact us.

You may have choices available to you through the device or software you use to access TotScoop. For example:

  • The browser you use may provide you with the ability to control cookies or other types of local data storage;
  • Your mobile device may provide you with choices around how and whether location or other data is shared with us.

To learn more about these choices, please see the information provided by the device or software provider.

6. Security

We follow generally accepted industry standards to protect the personal information submitted to us, both during transmission and once we receive it. However, no method of transmission over the Internet or via mobile device, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure. Therefore, while we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

7. Changes and updates to this Privacy Policy

TotScoop reserves the right to revise this Privacy Policy at any time at its sole discretion. We’ll post any updates to this policy on this page. If the changes are significant, we will send you an email or in-site notification and/or obtain your consent, as required by law. If you continue to use TotScoop after any changes come into effect, you thereby agree to the revised policy.
